Friends of the White Salmon river
Friends of the White Salmon is rooted in Klickitat County, at the foot of Mt. Adams. We see order in the spectacular natural diversity around us – living and non-living. We make our home here and we try to preserve the homes of all the other living beings here, from the microscopic to the apex predators.
Current Initiatives & Projects
Protect Shorelines
Shorelines–where the land and water meet–along the White Salmon and Klickitat Rivers face significant threats from development and extractive industries. Much of the damage is only visible to the rivers themselves or by those who spend time on its waters. Rivers need your voice to protect shorelines.

Save Western Gray Squirrel
Reduced to only three small isolated populations, these squirrels were recently designated as endangered by Washington State. They are a critical part of forest ecosystems and uniquely vulnerable in Klickitat County. Immediate action is needed to keep them alive.

Restore Wild Salmon & Steelhead
The White Salmon is one of the few rivers where hatchery fish have not been introduced—a true rarity. Wild salmon and steelhead are returning to the White Salmon River following the removal of Condit Dam. We need to know more about their return. Help us find out!
Protect Pushpum
Pumped storage is not the problem. The proposed location is. Goldendale Pumped Storage development will destroy an area known to Yakama Nation as “mother of all roots,” a sacred site for Yakama Nation ceremonies, legends, and gathering of traditional roots and medicines. Help us tell the true story.

Join Watershed Council
Local residents, local businesses, and environmental interests need to work together to protect the White Salmon watershed from the headwaters on the Gifford Pinchot to the Columbia. Help us get this off the ground.

Land Use
Klickitat County is updating their 1979 comprehensive land use plan. We must ensure the plan supports an envinorment that is climate resilient. Parcel fragmentation, residential sprawl, and large scale “green energy” projects are damaging the natural environment. Help us steer this in the right direction.

Critical Areas Awareness Event
We recently met down by the river for a short talk, free refreshments, and live music. We gathered to celebrate the White Salmon River—and learn why local streams, wetlands and wildlife need us to speak up!
Our Mission
Protecting watershed health and biodiversity in Klickitat and Skamania counties and the Mt. Adams region; raising public awareness of threats and opportunities; speaking up for streams, forests, and wildlife; and supporting the Yakama Nation in their protection of cultural and natural resources.
What We Protect

Watersheds, and the streams that flow from them, ground us and shape our lives. We honor and protect them.
Biodiversity
Klickitat County, where the sun meets the rain, is blessed with a range of diverse ecosystems. They all matter.
Mt. Adams Region
We bring our local perspective to partnerships with others trying to live in harmony with Mt. Adams
