Under Canvas update. It is my understanding that on Friday two appeals of the SEPA determination were filed. FWSR filed comments, which we will post on the website, but it takes lawyers to file SEPA appeals, and it's great news that Under Canvas opponents could get that done. The response from Under Canvas and the County will probably be a while. They could withdraw this SEPA and try again, or call for a full environmental assessment, or they could decide to litigate the appeal. Stay tuned.
Cougars (and bears) are being killed indiscriminately here in Klickitat County, and in some other counties in the state. WDFW has abdicated their responsibility to protect predators, whose presence in the ecosystem benefits us all.
NOW, the Fish and Wildlife Commission is going to approve a program called the “ WDFW Managed Nonlethal Pursuit Training Program” to allow hound hunters to practice (yup) hound hunting by hunting cougar. The hunters are not supposed to kill the cougar they are harassing, but the hunters can bring friends and family along to participate. This is little more than a system of private hound hunting. Washingtonians spoke loud and clear years ago against hound hunting. It is absolutely unacceptable for WDFW to be reinstating hound hunting in this underhanded way.
Write to the Fish and Wildlife Commission and ask that this proposal be tabled. The law authorizing it has already passed, so we need to do something about that, too, but this "training" proposal can be tabled indefinitely. Let's do this, folks.
